St. Vukasin was born in the village of Klepci, Herzegovina and he was a farmer and merchant. At the beginning of World War II, in 1942, members of the Croatian fascist Ustasas arrested him and transported him into the notorious concentration camp of Jasenovac, for his Serbian ethnicity and for refusing to convert Roman Catholicism. After horrible days full of hard labor, in January of 1943 Vukasin was brought before and Ustashi soldier, who threatened to execute him, but he would spare his life if he cried loudly: ''Long live Ante Pavelic!''(he was the leader of the Ustashi). Vukasin replied calmly: '' My child, you do what you must'' and refused to obey the soldier's request. The Ustashi soldier brandished his knife and cut off Vukasin's ear. The soldier then repeated his request and Vukasin repeated his answer. The soldier then cut off his other ear, followed by his nose, and then scarred his face. Next his tongue was cut. After gouging out his heart and slitting his throat, the soldier is said to have been unable to kill more people that night, fallen into alcoholism. The feast day of the Saint is on May 16.

Care Instructions

My handpainted icons are made from natural materials that constantly interact with their environment. These above materials are sensitive to extreme light, heat and humidity.

Handling the icons should also be done cautiously; oils from our hands can stain their shiny surface. Dust can softly be removed with a pure white cloth.

Following the above simple instructions will guarantee that your icon will age gracefully through time and will be enjoyed by the generations to come.
