St. Michael was born in the village Granitsa of Evrytania in 1510. At the age of 6 his father fell ill and died and when he came of marriageable age, he married a pious young woman. But life was difficult there and decided to leave. He ended up in Thessaloniki, where he learned the art of baking, and opened his own business. He had become known by the name ''Michael who distributes bread to the poor''. One day a young Muslim man entered his shop to buy bread and Michael started a conversation with him comparing the Christian faith to Islam. That time a Turkish jurist entered, to whom the young man accused the baker of blaspheming the Muslim religion. The Turk asked him to confirm the young man's complaint and Michael confirmed it. The Turk became furious and ran to the Turkish commander, to whom he denounced Michael as an insulter of Islam. In a little while, soldiers arrived at his shop, who arrested him and led him to the commander of the city. He bravely stood in front of him and apologized for his act and he invited the commander to become a Christian. The commander grabbed a thick piece of wood and hit him on the head and threw him into the dungeon. The next day he was tried and the judge ruled: ''death by fire''. His feast day is on March 21.
