Saint George the New Martyr of Chios

Orthodox icon of Saint George the New Martyr of Chios on thick plywood 20mm, which does not sting and keeps its shape over time. Preparation with acrylic stucco and have been used acrylic colors. It has been covered with varnish to keep the colors undiluted in time and humidity. Hanging clip included on the back of the icon.

St. George was born in Chios. At 10 years old, George was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker, with whom he traveled to Psara to build an iconostasis for the Church of St. Nicholas. While in Psara, George became acquainted with some other young boys and left the island without notifying his master. The young boys ended up in Kavala where they attempted to steal some fruit from a garden, but were caught and handed over to the judge. Frightened, George embraced Islam, was circumcised and named Ahmed. One day a ship arrived in Chios and George, now an apprenticed seaman, was seen getting off the ship by a relative. When the relative questioned him, he remained silent. George met his father and repented of his conversion to Islam and confessed his faith in Christ. George was taken by his father to Kydonies in Asia Minor and placed with an Orthodox Christian farmer, out of fear of the Turks for renouncing Islam. He stayed there for 10 years. Later he became engaged to be married. One day George quarreled with his fiancee's brother over some money, so he reported George to the authorities as an apostate of Islam. Soon men arrived and took George into custody and brought him before the judge. He was sentenced to death by beheading. His feast day is on November 26.
