St. David was probably born in Mesopotamia in 450 AD and died in Thessaloniki between 535 and 541 AD. In Thessaloniki David become a monk at the Monastery of Sts. Theodore and Mercurius at a young age. It is believed that outside the Aproiton gate David lived a monastic life. When the abbot of the monastery passed away, the monks found David worthy to replace him, however David refused this honor and decided to live his ascetic ordeals by climbing up an almond tree to the right of the main church and living up there for 3 years. He endured the most extreme trials like the Stylite Saints, enduring the bitter cold of the winter and the burning heat of the summer. When those 3 years passed he lived in silence in a cell, after instruction was given to him by an angel of the Lord. His feast day is on June 26.
