Saint Abercius (or Averky) was bishop of Hierapolis and was known for his God-given ability of wonderworking. During a festival of Apollo, he destroyed the idols in the temple, to the horror of the pagans. He cried out that the gods had become drunk and destroyed each other out of confusion. When the pagans came to avenge their gods, Abercius cast the demons out of three young men in the crowd. Struck with fear, the whole city converted to Christ. He reposed in peace in the middle of the 2nd century. His feast is celebrated on October 22.
