St. Francis was born in Paola, Italy, in 1416. He was educated by the Franciscan friars in Paola and after went with his parents on a pilgrimage to Assisi, to Rome, and other places of devotion. Returning to Paola, he selected a secluded cave and lived in solitude; later on he found an even-more secluded cave on the sea coast, where he lived for 6 years. In 1435 two companions joined him in his retreat and this caused to be built three cells and a chapel. By 1436, he and two followers began a movement that would become the foundation of the Hermits of Saint Francis of Assisi (Minim friars). In 1454 Francis built a large monastery and church. In 1474 Pope Sixtus IV gave him permission to write a rule for his community, and to assume the title of ''Hermits of St. Francis''. St. Francis became the tutor of King Charles VIII, who kept him near the court and frequently consulted him, and of King Louis XII. St. Francis died at Plessis on 2 April 1507 at the age of 91. He is the patron saint of the region of Calabria, the comune of Paola, the comune of Corigliano-Rossano, the comune of Altomonte, the comune of Botricello, the comune of Paterno Calabro, the comune of Castrovillari, the comune of Amato in Calabria, the island of Sicily, the comune of Stornarella and Bitonto in Apulia, the city of Naples, the city of Cosenza, the comune of Castelleone di Suasa in Ancona, the comune of Castrolibero, Luzzi and Bisignano in Cosenza, the city of La Chorrera in Panama, the city of Mabini in Phillipines, of boatmen, mariners and naval officers.

My handpainted icons are made from natural materials that constantly interact with their environment. These above materials are sensitive to extreme light, heat and humidity.
Handling the icons should also be done cautiously; oils from our hands can stain their shiny surface. Dust can softly be removed with a pure white cloth.
Following the above simple instructions will guarantee that your icon will age gracefully through time and will be enjoyed by the generations to come.
