St. Samantha (also known as Samthann), was a maiden of Ulster, Ireland. She was placed under the guardianship of the king of Ireland, King Cridan. The king betrothed her to be married to a nobleman, though she herself did not want to be married. On the night before the wedding, the nobleman, who was staying at the castle, woke up and found a light piercing through the roof of the castle. He followed the light and found it bathing Samthann's face with heavenly light. On the day of the wedding, she convinced the nobleman not to consummate the marriage while wedding guests were still around. In the meantime, she prayed for God to somehow stop the marriage before it was consummated. It is said that a fire began to blaze in the midst of the wedding guests, and in the distraction Samthann was able to escape. When she was found, the king gave in because of the fire and the story the nobleman shared about the heavenly light. The king asked her who she would like to marry, and she said that the only person she would marry was God. She entered the convent to become a nun. She became the abbess of the convent of Clonbroney, and she became known for some minor miracles. But mostly she was known for her wisdom in teaching and being a spiritual advisor to others, including Maelruin, a major reformer within Celtic Christianity. Her feast day is December 18th, and she is known as the Patroness of Spiritualness.
