St. Wilfrid was born in Northumbria around 634 and was the son of an insignificant nobleman. At the age of 14 he was sent to the court of the Northumbrian king Oswiu and was educated at Lindisfarne Abbey for some years. Around 653 Wilfrid and Benedict Biscop went on their pilgrimage to Rome. He made his way back to Lyon, where he stayed 3 years and was tonsured and in 658 returned to England. Around 661 Wilfrid became Abbot of the monastery of Ripon until 665. In 669 Wilfrid became the Bishop of York and was deposed in 678. In 679 Wilfrid decided to let Pope Agatho to decide about his diposition and went to Rome. A synod ruled that he should be reinstated as Bishop of York, but that the division of the diocese should remain. Wilfrid returned to Northumbria in 680. However, neither Archbishop Theodore nor King Ecgfrith recognized the papal letter and was imprisoned for nine months. As late as 680, Wilfrid went into exile in Mercia and then to Sussex. In 686 Aldfrith ascended the throne of Northumbria and Wilfrid regained his monasteries at Ripon and Hexham and the Bishopric of York through the agency of Archbishop Theodore. Aldfrith planned to establish another bishopric at Ripon, while Wilfrid was again exiled in 692, this time to Mercia. Eighteen months before his death, Wilfrid suffered a stroke. At his monastery at Oundle, Wilfrid suffered another bout of illness, from which he died shortly thereafter in 709/710. His feast day is on April 24 and is the patron saint of the Diocese of Middlesbrough and the town of Ripon.
