There he spent his childhood and studied Holy Scripture, the church services and military science. In 1260 he married the daughter of Prince Basil of Yaroslavl, had one son with the name Michael, but was soon widowed. Theodore spent 3 years at Sarai, the capital of the Golden Horde. Theodore married the daughter of Khan Mengu-Temir and had 2 sons, David and Constantine. He lived in Sarai until 1290, when he heard that his son, Prince Michael, died. He returned to Yaroslavl as a Prince and began to building up his city and principality. In 1297 Theodore went on a campaign to Smolensk to reclaim his lawful rights to the Smolensk principality. In 1299 Theodore became ill and went to the Savior-Transfiguration Monastery and received monastic tonsure. After a few days he died at the monastery.
