Saint Martin the Pope of Rome

Catholic icon of Saint Martin the Pope of Rome, on thick plywood 20mm, which does not sting and keeps its shape over time. Preparation with acrylic stucco and have been used acrylic colors. It has been covered with varnish to keep the colors undiluted in time and humidity. Hanging clip included on the back of the icon.  

St. Martin was born in Tuscany and was highly educated; he joined the clergy of the Church of Rome. As a priest he represented the See of Rome in Constantinople. After the death of Pope Theodore I in 649, Martin was chosen to succeed him. During his papacy, the Monothelite heresy began to flourish. Emperor Constans published a book titled ''Pattern of Faith'', which supported the heresy of Monothelite. When Pope Martin read the book, he staunchly supported Orthodoxy and condemned the heresy. When the Emperor learned this, he sent the military commander Olympius to kill the Pope. The commander was too scared to assassinate the Pope himself and hired an assassin to perform the deed. The assassin became blinded upon approaching St, Martin and was unable to kill him. Emperor Constans send the military commander Theodore with the accussations of collaboration with the Saracens. St. Martin denied the accussations and was arrested in Lateran, 653. He was imprisoned in Constantinople and was starved and abused by prison guards for 3 years. St. Martin was brought to trial and was condemned. He was deposed from his rank and died due to hunger and sickness at Cherson, Crimea in 655. His feast day is on April 13.
