Saint Ignatius the Archbishop of Methymna

Orthodox icon of Saint Ignatius the Archbishop of Methymna on thick plywood 20mm, which does not sting and keeps its shape over time. Preparation with acrylic stucco and have been used acrylic colors. It has been covered with varnish to keep the colors undiluted in time and humidity. Hanging clip included on the back of the icon.

St. Ignatius was born in the village Faraga, Lesvos in 1492. It is not known what school he attended or where he studied. He was married, had children, and then was ordained a priest with the office of Sakellionos. Among his other tasks and occupations was to copy books to enrich the library, and write poems. During this period, there was a terrible epidemic on the island, which also affected his family. His wife and children died, except for just one child. St. Ignatius with great and fiery zeal repaired the dilapidated monastery of Myrsiniotissas and founded the monastery of Leimonos. To preserve the monastery from the Turks and bad neighbors, he went to Constantinople and had issued a Patriarchal Act in 1530, and decrees of the Turkish Government with which the monastery was embodied with property. From 1426-1530 he was abbot of the monastery and in 1531 he was elected Metropolitan of Methymna. At the end of 1563, St. Ignatius was asked to resign from his position and to spend the rest of his life like a monk in the monasteries. In 1566 he died peacefully. His feast day is on October 14.
