St. Frideswide was born in Oxford in 680 AD. Very early the young princess showed monastic inclinations. When she was a young girl, she was pursued by the pagan prince of Mercia, Ethelgar, who sought her in marriage. She escaped his intensions by fleeing into the woods of Binsey, to the river Thames and to a village of Oxford. She stayed there for 3 years, using a former pigsty as her cell. She was to found a double monastery on the site of what is now Christchurch Cathedral in Oxford. This was dedicated to Mary the Mother of God. But in order to live alone Frideswide returned to her refuge and built herself a cell in Binsey woods where she lived in prayer. She reposed in 735 AD. Her feast day is on October 19. She is the patron saint of Oxford and of Oxford University.

Care Instructions

My handpainted icons are made from natural materials that constantly interact with their environment. These above materials are sensitive to extreme light, heat and humidity.

Handling the icons should also be done cautiously; oils from our hands can stain their shiny surface. Dust can softly be removed with a pure white cloth.

Following the above simple instructions will guarantee that your icon will age gracefully through time and will be enjoyed by the generations to come.
