St. Barbarus was a former robber from Arabia; he ventured with his band of pirates to Acarnania in Greece and committed robberies, extortions and murders. The Acarnanians revolted against the pirates and killed them all, except Barbarus who escaped. When Barbarus was sitting in a cave and gazing upon his stolen possessions, he thought the inevitability of death and pondered over the multitude of his wicked deeds. Barbarus left all his treasures in the cave and went to the nearest church. The priest gave him a place in his own house; he lived with the cattle and eating with the animals. He decided to remain for the rest of his life, tied at the neck, waist and legs with three chains just as he tied to his victims when he was a robber. Having received absolotiun from his sins, Barbarus went into the woods of Tryfo in Xiromero and lived there for 12 years, naked. Once, merchants came to the place where Barbarus lived. In the deep grass they saw something moving, and thinking that it was an animal, they shot several arrows. They were terrified to see that they had mortally wounded a man. The priest found his body shining with a heavenly light and buried him at the place he was killed. His feast day is on June 23.

My handpainted icons are made from natural materials that constantly interact with their environment. These above materials are sensitive to extreme light, heat and humidity.

Handling the icons should also be done cautiously; oils from our hands can stain their shiny surface. Dust can softly be removed with a pure white cloth.

Following the above simple instructions will guarantee that your icon will age gracefully through time and will be enjoyed by the generations to come.
