St. Lazarus was born in Bulgaria, in 1774. At a young age he went to Soma in Asia Minor and became a shepherd. One day while tending his sheep in the fields, he sat down and fell asleep. During this time a Muslim lady went by who was attacked by the sheep dog. Awakened by the dog's barking, Lazarus rushed to the lady's rescue. Fortunately the dog calmed down and the lady only suffered a torn dress. However, this infuriated the lady, who immediately went home and told her husband that she was attacked by an Orthodox Christian Shepherd who attempted to rape her. This infuriated the husband, who went out in search of Lazarus, but he didn't know him. Although Lazarus found out about the intention of the lady's husband, he did not go into hiding, and appeared in court. He was charged and imprisoned and was tortured. He was hanged on April 23, 1802, which is also his feast day.

Care Instructions

My handpainted icons are made from natural materials that constantly interact with their environment. These above materials are sensitive to extreme light, heat and humidity.

Handling the icons should also be done cautiously; oils from our hands can stain their shiny surface. Dust can softly be removed with a pure white cloth.

Following the above simple instructions will guarantee that your icon will age gracefully through time and will be enjoyed by the generations to come.
