Catholic icon of Saint Alphege, Archbishop of Canterbury on thick plywood 20mm, which does not sting and keeps its shape over time. Preparation with acrylic stucco and have been used acrylic colors. It has been covered with varnish to keep the colors undiluted in time and humidity. Hanging clip included on the back of the icon.
St. Alphege was born in Weston, England in 953 and became a monk early in life. He first entered the monastery of Deerhurst, but then moved to Bath, where he became an anchorite and in time abbot of Bath Abbey. In 984 Alphege was elected Bishop of Winchester. In 1006 Alphege succeeded Archbishop of Canterbury. He went to Rome in 1007 to receive his pallium from Pope John XVIII, but was robbed during his journey. In 1011, the Danes raided Canterbury and Alphege was taken prisoner and held captive for 7 months. Alphege refused to allow a ransom to be paid for his freedom and as a result was killed on 19 April 1012 at Greenwich. He is the patron saint of the city of Greenwich and kidnap victims.
