Saint John Gabriel Perboyre

Catholic icon of Saint John-Gabriel Perboyre on thick plywood 20mm, which does not sting and keeps its shape over time. Preparation with acrylic stucco and have been used acrylic colors. It has been covered with varnish to keep the colors undiluted in time and humidity. Hanging clip included on the back of the icon.

St. John Gabriel was born in 1802 at Le Puech, France. In 1816 he accompanied his brother at the Vincentian seminary in Montauban and felt drawn to follow this life himself. He wrote to his father that he felt that he was called to serve as a priest. He entered the novitiate of the Congregation of the Mission at the minor seminary in Montauban in 1818. In 1825 he was ordained to the priesthood and in 1832 he was assigned to supervise the novitiate in Paris. In 1835 he was sent to serve in China, and arrived in Macau, where he began the study of the Chinese language. From there he began his journey to Ho-Nan in a junk ship. The journey took 5 months and spend the rest of his time of service serving the poverty-stricken people of the region. In 1838, he was transferred to the mission of Hubei, and in 1839, persecutions against Christians broke out in Hubei. The Mandarin of Hubei sent soldiers to arrest the missionaries. John Gabriel was stripped of his garments and clothed with rags, bound, and was dragged from tribunal to tribunal. At each trial, he was treated inhumanly. Finally, he was taken to Wuchang, and after torture, was condemned to death. In September 11, 1840 he was strangled to death on a cross at Wuchang.
