St. Demetrius was born in Samarina in the end of the 18th century. He became a monk in a monastery of his homeland, upon with pray and fast he purified his body and soul. After the suppression, by Ali Pasha in 1808, of the revolution instigated by the priest Efthimios Vlachavas, Demetrius left his monastery and went around the villages preaching the word of God. After slander, Ali Pasha arrested him and imprisoned him. Then he ordered his brutal torture. So the executioners pierced his arms with reed spikes and then stuck them in his fingernails and toenails. Then they clamped his head in a vise and then after hanging him upside down they burned him with fire from below. Then Ali Pasha built Demetrius inside a wall, leaving only his head outside to prolong the torture. The Saint thus endured 10 days and died in 1808. His feast day is on August 17.
