It has been covered with varnish to keep the colors undiluted in time and humidity. Hanging clip included on the back of the icon.

St. Sophia was born in 1845 to a noble family. In 1875, at the age of 30, she married a former student of the Medical and Surgical Academy, but on 1877 her husband died and after three days she gave birth to a daughter. In 1880, she sold the estate in Tula and went to Optina to meet Elder Ambrose of Optina. As a test, he ordered her to marry an eldery Kozelsky landowner, which she did. Her husband died on 1884. In the village of Shamordino a female monastery was created, founded by Elder Ambrose. This convent opened its doors to women who were poor, sickly or blind. Sophia entrusted her daughter to her godmother and in 1884 she was tonsured a nun and later into the schema. She served as abbess for 4 years. She died in 1888 and her feast day is on January 24.

My handpainted icons are made from natural materials that constantly interact with their environment. These above materials are sensitive to extreme light, heat and humidity.

Handling the icons should also be done cautiously; oils from our hands can stain their shiny surface. Dust can softly be removed with a pure white cloth.

Following the above simple instructions will guarantee that your icon will age gracefully through time and will be enjoyed by the generations to come.
