St. Smaragda was born on January 2, 1858 in Chernigov province. In 1863 her mother took her to a school for orphan girls at the Vvedensky Monastery in Nizhyn. After her graduation, she entered the Vvedensky Monastery as a novice and in 1876 she took monastic vows, and eventually became a dean of the monastery. In 1914 she was elected abbess. In 1922 she was arrested during a campaign to confiscate church valuables and the court sentenced her to 3 years in prison. After her imprisonment, she returned to the monastery and in 1927 the Vvedensky Monastery was finally closed. St. Smaragda and 8 nuns were recolated to Saint George Monastery in Kozeletsk. In 1930 she was again arrested for anti-Soviet agitation, but was released due to lack of evidence. After her arrest, she and 4 sisters settled in Kozeletsk in a private apartment. During the Great Patriotic Wars she returned with her sisters to the Vvedensky Monastery. In 1943 the monastery was closed again and she was forced to move to Chernigov. She died on January 10, 1945.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
My handpainted icons are made from natural materials that constantly interact with their environment. These above materials are sensitive to extreme light, heat and humidity.
Handling the icons should also be done cautiously; oils from our hands can stain their shiny surface. Dust can softly be removed with a pure white cloth.
Following the above simple instructions will guarantee that your icon will age gracefully through time and will be enjoyed by the generations to come.
