St. Pafnoutios lived during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. When he declared persecution against the Christians, the prefect Arrianos wanted to arrest Pafnoutios into the desert of Egypt, where he lived. But Pafnoutios went to Arrianos by himself, who ordered to be tortured instantly. They tore his flesh to the point where his entrails were visible. Pafnoutios prayed, and miraculously his wounds were closed and which resulted the two soldiers who tortured him to believe in Christ. Arrianos beheaded the two soldiers and threw Pafnoutios in prison. There, he met 40 prokritous who were imprisoned for delaying to pay taxes to the government and succeeded in making them Christians. Arrianos heard it and furious burnt them alive, but Pafnoutios miraculously disappeared from his sight. And, having in the meanwhile converted many to the Christian faith, he presented himself to Arrianos, who ordered him to be cut to pieces. And while Arrianos went to see him dead in pieces, the pieces of the body were joined together and Pafnoutios appeared before him alive. The miracle caused a whole battalion of soldiers to believe in Christ. In his dispair, Arrianos sent Pafnoutios to Rome, where he was crucified. His feast day is on September 25.
