Saint Luke, a physician at Antioch, and a painter, who became a convert of Saint Paul and afterwards his fellow laborer. Though not an eyewitness of Christ's life, he diligently gathered information from the Apostles and wrote his Gospel and the Book of Acts. Saint Luke shared the shipwreck and perils of Saint Paul's voyage to Rome, and was with him in his last days. He later died a martyr's death in Achaia. He is credited as the first Christian iconographer, painting icons of the Virgin Mary from life, some of which exist to this day. According to tradition, St. Luke painted the following icons: The “All-Merciful” Kikkos icon of the Mother of God located in the Kikkos Monastery, Cyprus. The Częstochowa icon of the Mother of God located in a Catholic monastery on Jasna Gora in Częstochowa, Poland. The Vilnius icon of the Mother of God. The Vladimir icon of the Mother of God and it was painted on a board from the table at which the Holy Family took food.
