Saint Joachim of Ithaca

Orthodox icon of Saint Joachim of Ithaca on thick plywood 20mm, which does not sting and keeps its shape over time. Preparation with acrylic stucco and have been used acrylic colors. It has been covered with varnish to keep the colors undiluted in time and humidity. Hanging clip included on the back of the icon.  

St. Joachim was born in Kalyvia in Northern Ithaca from pious and virtuous parents. When John was a small child, his mother died. His father remarried and his stepmother troubled and tormented him. In his teenage years he worked as a sailor on his father's boat and after that aboard the ship of his compatriot, Captain George Vrettos-Hadji. On one of his trips he found refuge at Mountain Athos, where he became a monk at the Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi. With the start of the Greek Revolution, the abbot of Vatopaidi chose Monk Joachim to send him to preach in the Peloponnese. In 1827 Joachim arrived at his homeland of Ithaca and worked there for 41 years tirelessly amidst the world, error, heresy and sin. He brought suffering to his ascetic body by wearing internal leaden plates tied to his waist and he would carry big sacks with stones and pebbles. Gifted by God he was a teacher, counselor, nurturer and physician to the people of Ithaca. At an advanced age he reposed in the Lord, on 2 March 1868, which is his feast day.
