He was sent to Alaska with a group of ten monks in 1794. After a decade of work, Saint Herman became the head of the mission and was the headmaster of the school. He was greatly respected by the natives of Kodiak Island, but he desired to live as a hermit and moved to Spruce Island about 1817. But the Aleut natives loved him so much, they visited often and a settlement grew up around the New Valaam hermitage. Saint Herman reposed in peace on November 15, 1836. Regarded by many as the patron saint of North America, Saint Herman is venerated by the Orthodox Church, as well as the Anglican Communion. He was glorified on August 9, 1970, and this is his primary feast day. He was distinguished for his oratorical ability and his generally Christian activity. The Jews, seeing his activity and fearing his action, ordered him to stop preaching. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHe ignored them and continued to preach the Word of God. Then, some intolerant Jews slandered him for blaspheming God, Solomon’s Temple and the prophet Moses. With this accusation he was arrested and dragged before the Jewish Congress to apologize and be tried. Stephen courageously defended his faith and accused the Jews of being cruel to the prophets, whom they killed, as well as to all God’s people, while arguing for the divinity of Christ. All Stephen managed to do was further enrage his accusers, who seized him from the Council chamber and led him out of Jerusalem, where they began stoning him. Stephanos calmly accepted the stoning with the words “Lord Jesus, receive the spirit of mind” and kneeling he prayed for his persecutors, saying: “Lord, do not impute this sin to them”. Immediately afterwards he gave up his spirit. His memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on December 27, the finding of his remains on September 15, and the retrieval on August 2. He composed hundreds of hymns, sermons, and apologetic works, and went on to teach outside his monastic community. He traveled for a period of his life and participated in the Church’s development, but he spent his final years in a cave in silence and solitude. According to tradition, he was sickly as a child but was healed through the Kursk Root Icon of the Theotokos. At age 19, he became a monk, then a priest, and lived in the wilderness as a hermit for 25 years. There he devoted his entire life to ceaseless prayer and truly acquired the \"peace that passes all understanding.\" At one point, Seraphim was beaten by a band of thieves, which left him with a hunched back. In 1815, in obedience to a vision he received, he began to admit visitors (always greeting them with \"Christ is risen!\") and offer the loving advice he is reknowned for. At age 74, St. Seraphim died in prayer before an icon of the Theotokos. The saint was buried, but his relics were uncovered in 1903 when he was glorified as a saint. His relics were lost during the Bolshevik persecution in Russia, but were rediscovered in the basement of a museum in 1991. This rejuvenated the faith of Russians who were just beginning to come out of the Soviet darkness. In this place, people lived far from the way of Lord, but John, together with his wife Elizabeth Konstantinovna, managed to become a paradigm of Christian life and lead thousands to Christianity. Saint John conducted great missionary and educational work. In December 1908 A.D. Saint John of Kronstadt became seriously ill and passed away at the age of 80. There he famously stood against the heretic Arius, who taught that Jesus was a created being. St. Nicholas is called “Wonderworker” for his many miracles. By his prayers and actions, famines were lifted, prisoners were set free, and diseases were healed.            At an old age, St. Nicholas died a natural death. He was the last offspring of Papa-Kyriakos, the priest of the village, and his wife Anna who lived in the time of Archbishop Nicephorus. When John was a child, his father sent him to learn how to read and write through study of the Holy Scriptures, and the amazing aptitude he had shown was an early indication of what his true vocation would be. When he became a young man, his parents decided it was time to find him a nice girl from a nearby village to settle down with. Not much is known about John's fiancée, but his future in-laws turned out to be an evil lot! For reasons not recorded in the manuscript, they served the promising lad poisoned fish, causing him to lose his eyesight. They then sent for his father to come and take his son away because he was no longer suitable marriage potential. One can well understand the pain and suffering of the poor village folk upon seeing their brilliant son in such a sorry state. But John didn't seem to share their grief. His physical blindness had opened wide his spiritual vision and he spent his days in prayer. He even gave most of the food provided by his parents to the poor, keeping barely enough to sustain himself. He\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e lived like this for twelve years, until the day he saw his end approaching and summoned his household servant, also named John. He told John that he would be surrendering his soul to the Lord the next day at noon, and asked for a bunch of grapes from his father's new crop. The servant found himself in a difficult position. It was unthinkable for anyone to cut even a single grape from the vineyard before Papa-Kyriakos had been there to bless it. But John insisted, telling his namesake not to fear. The latter gave in and brought a succulent bunch of fresh grapes to John, who said a prayer and started to eat. When his father saw him, he was furious at what he regarded as irreverence and slapped his blind son across the face. John quietly handed the bunch back to the servant and told him to return it where he had taken it from. The servant again obeyed and, to his amazement, the bunch of grapes rejoined the vine at exactly the spot from where it was cut. By the time the servant returned to tell him about it, John Lampadistis had died. After John was buried, people saw light beaming from his grave. They informed his father, who disregarded it as light from candles. But word spread and individuals who were known to be possessed came to the village, saying they were seeking John's body in order to pray to it and be cured. When Papa-Kyriakos saw that nothing could dissuade them, he agreed to open his son's grave. They found his relics, but his heart was preserved \"like a dry fig\". He was baptized in the Methodist faith, but later lost his faith and became an atheist. In the 1950s, he attended college and delved into Buddhism, art and culture in San Francisco. He also came out as a homosexual. Eugene was introduced to Orthodoxy through a Finnish-born friend, who at the time was losing his faith. But Eugene was deeply inspired by it as he delved deeper. Eventually he completely shed his homosexual identity and was received into the Orthodox Church in 1962, truly reborn. Fr. Seraphim wrote several books which remain popular today, as he used Orthodox patristics to examine many contemporary issues. He also gave many lectures, some of which were recorded and continue to circulate today. His works were translated into many languages and were smuggled into the Soviet union, inspiring the suffering Orthodox Christians there. He also promoted the knowledge and veneration among Orthodox Christians of many pre-Schism Western Saints. A major focus was the true transformation of the heart by the practices and doctrines of the Orthodox Faith, a transformation that he himself had experienced. While working in his cell, Fr. Seraphim fell ill from the results of a blood clot and died on September 2, 1982. Many who attended his funeral witnessed a beautiful fragrance emanating from his body. He conti-nued to defend the holy icons during the waves of iconoclasm, and was one of the first Christian theologians to refute the teachings of Islam. Despite the adversity, he and his wife Alexandra relied on their Orthodox faith in Christ, and instructed their children in it. He was born in western Russia in 1754. According to tradition, he was sickly as a child but was healed through the Kursk Root Icon of the Theotokos. At age 19, he became a monk, then a priest, and lived in the wilderness as a hermit for 25 years. There he devoted his entire life to ceaseless prayer and truly acquired the \"peace that passes all understanding.\" At one point, Seraphim was beaten by a band of thieves, which left him with a hunched back. In 1815, in obedience to a vision he received, he began to admit visitors (always greeting them with \"Christ is risen!\") and offer the loving advice he is reknowned for. At age 74, St. Seraphim died in prayer before an icon of the Theotokos. The saint was buried, but his relics were uncovered in 1903 when he was glorified as a saint. His relics were lost during the Bolshevik persecution in Russia, but were rediscovered in the basement of a museum in 1991. This rejuvenated the faith of Russians who were just beginning to come out of the Soviet darkness.
